Seminar - Towards recognition for the digital commons

As part of the the School of Sociology Seminar series at ANU, VOSON Lab affiliate A/P Mathieu O'Neil presented the research 'Towards recognition for the digital commons: Mapping researcher contributions to software innovation'.

The study aims at unpacking the contributuion of researchers to free and open source software (FOSS), by focusing on two GitHub areas: repositories dealing with Deep Learning (DL), and R packages, popular in the research community. The contributions of firm employees and researchers was compared and analysed, to identify who initiated issues, who responded, who was assigned to address issues, and the speed at which issue types were opened and closed.

The seminar took place on 15 August 2022. Access the report: O’Neil, Cai, Muselli, Pailler & Zacchiroli (2021) The coproduction of open source software by volunteers and big tech firms.
